ROUTE DESCRIPTION

This ride takes us through an area interesting for its geology and natural history and lots of historic and archaeological interest. We start from Santa Maria Navarrese along the tarmaced road towards the SS 125, into which we turn to the right towards Triei. We go through the small settlement of Ardauli and at Triei follow the signs to go and see the nuraghe of Bau Nuraxi Osono, made of big blocks of local granite and with the area in front of it which was once occupied by a large settlement.

The nearby “tomba dei giganti” at Osono, a large nuragic monument, is also worth visiting. You reach it after climbing up some steep hairpins to reach a level area where you turn off to the left on a dirt road. Then you go back to the tarmaced road and follow the sterrato which climbs up to the pass of “Genne Aramene” with good views over the underlying plain and the Loppelle nuraghe. We reach the SS 125 and continue to Baunei, a pretty mountain village with lovely views over the countryside below.

We leave Baunei and take the turnoff on the left for Perda Longa, a charming natural monument, a tall rock spire overlooking the sea, and after only a couple of hundred metres we take the sterrato on the right for Monte Scoine and climb up to the old quarry at Locorbu. The last part of the ride follows, surrounded by the scents of the Mediterranean macchia mediterranea, a narrow technical trail which leads to a broader sterrato which takes us to Sa Contralba and then back to Santa Maria Navarrese on the coast, our starting point.
