This ride starts from the panoramic village of Baunei, famous for its beautiful countryside and the sinkhole “Su Sterru”, whose 300 m depth makes it Europe’s deepest, and popular destination for lots of walkers with its karst valleys, many cliffs and stunning little bays reached by the “Selvaggio Blu” trek. From Baunei we climb up the steep hairpins to reach the Golgo plateau at “Su Idile” and we continue until at the first descending hairpin we turn onto the sterrato following signs for Monte Ginnirco and admire in front of us the imposing 700 m high cliff of Punta Giradili. We climb up some switchbacks until we reach the sheepfold (ovile) “duspiggius”, where we climb over the gate to arrive at a viewpoint from which we enjoy an indescribable view over a fascinating section of coastline, from the Golfo di Arbatax to Cala Gonone and the natural monument of Perda Longa, a limestone pinnacle, and the “cengia Giradili”.
Sated by such beauty, we go back to the sterrato and continue the climb to arrive at the “Idileddu” sheepfold with the 800 m amsl Monte Ginnirco to the east and then ride more-or-less level on the crest of “Pissu e Serra” with a broad view over the Golfo di Gonone and arrive at the ride’s highest point, 750 m amsl. After so many beautiful views, we start the descent to the nuraghe Co'e Serra at first on a rough track of white limestone then on a smoother sterrato to arrive at the nuraghe with its several circular huts. The path continues level to the bar “Su Porteddu” near to which we can go to see the pools “As Piscinas” or the famous karst sinkhole “Su Sterru”.
On the bikes once again, we take a turn-off on the right and follow signs for the country church of San Pietro with its menhir from a nearby nuragic village, the only such menhir in the whole of Sardinia with a human face carved onto it. From the Golgo plateau we ride back towards Baunei along the long but easy gradually climbing tarmac road which, after a series of hairpins, brings us to “Su Idile”. We take the strada sterrata on the left to arrive at the belvedere above the village of Baunei from where we have a view over much of Ogliastra. Here we turn off the strada sterrata for a muletrack with stone steps which rapidly brings us back to the centre of Baunei, the endpoint of this fascinating ride.
